John Ratliff founded Appletree Answers in 1995 in his two-bedroom apartment in Wilmington, Del., as a traditional telephone answering service. He grew the company through a series of acquisitions to 24 US- based locations and 650 employees when it was sold to a strategic buyer in June,2012.
Passionate about strategy, Ratliff used the methodologies of the Rockefeller Habits to reduce turnover at the company from the industry average of 110% to around 18% in the four years between 2008 and 2012. One key initiative was the company’s Dream On initiative, a “Make-A-Wish-Foundation” style program for employees in need. Appletree’s high retention rate allowed the company to manage its exponential growth while driving tremendous EBITDA and revenue gains.
In one sign of its employees’ enthusiasm, the company won the We Our Workplace Video Contest, run by the prestigious Great Place to Work Institute. Ultimately it was Appletree’s focus on employee engagement that drove its valuation on exit.
Ratliff is now CEO of GazellesPRO, the inner circle of Gazelles companies, as well as managing director of STS Capital Partners, an international mergers and acquisitions firm. He is also active in Virgin Unite, Sir Richard Branson’s charitable foundation focused on improving the employee experience. In that capacity, he is involved with its initiative on people and innovation.
Ratliff speaks frequently with companies of all sizes to diagnose problems in their employee retention and morale and to drive improvements. He also brings expertise in using a business’s operating system to leverage the effectiveness of the management team.
Ratliff has a BSBA in Marketing and Finance from the University of Delaware. He lives in Wilmington, Del., with his wife Lynne and their three young children. In his free time, he flies his TBM 850 single-engine turboprop plane.

Mike Cline, CEO, and Founder of Tech Guys Who Get Marketing earned his BS in Engineering Physics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Combined with his childhood love of video games, programming, a good challenge, this degree led him to start a “big picture” tech company that now serves clients around the world.
Tech Guys Who Get Marketing (a.k.a: “Tech Guys”), specializes in online marketing and strategic use of technology to increase efficiency and results. For example, one of their projects included a successful million dollar Kickstarter campaign for the first publicly accessible space telescope.
From his home base in Eden, Utah, Mike also oversees a handful of other companies, with services ranging from educational conferences for high-achieving high school students in science, medicine, and technology, to a blockchain business focused on combating poverty— to custom art and build fabrication for private clients, environments, and events.
For example, Mike’s gear-head roots led him to convert a 2001 Prius into a giant flying peanut butter and jelly sandwich with wings… that serves gourmet, gluten-free toasted peanut butter and jelly “sammiches” at Burning Man and other festivals. If you’re ready for some interesting conversations, ask him more about this.

James Altucher is one of those guys who seems to have experienced 5 lifetimes. He got his start working at HBO in the IT department – and ended up hosting a TV show for them. In 1996, he founded a web-design firm called Reset Inc., and managed to land big-name clients like Wu Tang Clan, American Express, Con Edison, Time Warner, and BMG. He sold Reset Inc. for $10 million just 2 years later.
After using the proceeds to invest in tech stocks during the dotcom boom, he lost everything he had in just two years. That led him to seriously re-evaluate his approach to both business and life. Then Jim Cramer of TheStreet.com hired him to write about stocks. Altucher also started a hedge fund, which he managed until closing it down shortly before the financial crisis. He founded an investing website called Stockpickr, which he sold for $10 million in 2007. All in all, James has started and run more than 20 companies and is currently invested in over 30. He’s also an incredibly prolific author, having written 17 books. Two have been WSJ best-sellers: ‘The Power of No’ and ‘Choose Yourself’. USA Today also named ‘Choose Yourself’ among the 12 Best Business Books of All Time. And his book ‘I Was Blind But Now I See’ reached No. 1 in Amazon.com’s motivational books section.
James currently hosts a super successful podcast called “The James Altucher Show” with guests of the caliber of Tony Robbins, Mark Cuban, Peter Thiel, and Tim Ferriss, to name just a few. He’s also the editor of a newsletter called “The James Altucher Report” where he talks about big trends in business, investing, and success in general.
Imagine being able to fly. Walk through walls. Shape shift. Breathe underwater. Conjure loved ones-or total strangers-out of thin air. Imagine experiencing your nighttime dreams with the same awareness you possess right now-fully functioning memory, imagination, and self-awareness. Imagine being able to use this power to be more creative, solve problems, and discover a deep sense of well-being.
This is lucid dreaming-the ability to know you are dreaming while you are in a dream and then being able to consciously explore and change the elements of the dream.
Jared is the co-author of A Field Guide to Lucid Dreaming and an experienced oneironaut (a word that comes from the Greek oneira, meaning dreams, and nautis, meaning sailor).
Campers will learn about the powerful REM sleep stage-a window into lucid dreams. Improve dream recall by keeping a journal. Learn the importance of reality checks such as “The Finger”-during the day, try to pass your finger through your palm; then, when you actually do it successfully, you’ll know that you’re dreaming. And once you become lucid, you’ll know how to make the most of it. Every time you dream, you are washing up on the shores of your own inner landscape. Learn to explore a strange and thrilling world!

Dan Martell is a walking testament to the fact that anyone can turn things around with enough determination. Dan got off to a rough start in life. Dan developed a passion for entrepreneurship, and jumped into it with no formal business training. After a few early failures, Dan has successfully built and sold 3 companies (so far). First he founded Spheric, Inc, which grew an average of 152% per year until he sold it in 2008. Next he co-founded Flowtown, a social media marketing platform that grew to over 50,000 small business customers before being acquired in 2011.
Then Dan founded Clarity.fm, which helped entrepreneurs and business owners get advice from top business minds over the phone. The company raised $1.6M in funding and was growing about 30% each month until Dan sold it in 2015. Aside from launching his own businesses, Dan has also been a very active angel investor. Sally believes the greatest value you can add is to become more of yourself. Because of this belief, she has created the Fascination Advantage®, the first personality assessment that measures how others perceive you.
After researching over 600,000 people, her algorithm can pinpoint your most valuable differentiating traits. Unlike Myers-Briggs or StrengthsFinder, this test doesn’t measure how you see the world – but how the world sees you.
Her recent book, How the World Sees You, was a #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller. At the start of her career, Sally skyrocketed to the top of the advertising elite while writing commercials that fascinated millions of consumers. At the age of 24, she was the most award-winning copywriter in the U.S. and opened her first ad agency at age 27. Her work still hangs in the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Astacianna Hatcher is a dedicated conservation biologist and TEDx presenter. She travels to remote corners of the globe to investigate the health of ecosystems and measure their unique biodiversity. Astacianna listens to the songs and chirps around her, to monitor local bird populations, all by ear. Generally she is immersed in dense tropical jungles for weeks to months at time, fine-tuning her ear across thousands of hectares day after day. This information is passed on to other scientists to help develop conservation and ecosystem restoration plans. She brings with her a unique perspective of truly listening. Yes, the simple act of standing still and listening allows you to connect with the world and new dimensions are revealed. (In a bit of “Synchro-Maverick-nicity” she was once asked years ago to be the resident birder for our Camp center.)
